C&M Hilly 50

Saturday 16 Feb 08
Congratulations to Ed and all his team of helpers (or was it leppers climbing on the band wagon - NO IT DEFINITELY WAS NOT), especially the Mitchell family and Graham for helping Ed carry the paste board from Rykers to top of Box Hill and congratulations to Gary Dodd for his usual masterful sub 2 hr time (1hr. 50min) fabulous for such an old boy. I guess the biggest cheer should go to Simon (L3) and his long suffering wife for marshalling at the most tricky point, Hoe Lane or was it How Lane and for the tremendous pre-publicity he generated to attract another record number of riders. Photo above shows L3 with 2 of the oldest riders en-route stopping for a chat and just missing the cut at 3hrs (by one minute). The guy in the middle was down as a Wayfarer (more like a wayward fellow) and the guy on the right with the matching blue top is Ubaldo commonly known as Toni (or is it Tagliatelli) - well anyway he comes from the country where Spagetti grows on trees.

SWLDA Hilly 50

Dear Cyclist

The Cheam and Morden CTC Hilly 50 has rightly taken its place among the pantheon of cycling events. Shorter than the Tour de France, and less cobbly than the Paris-Roubaix, it is, nonetheless, the most ridiculous of all the Classics. Last year 190 riders made the mistake of riding it. This year we hope that even more will do the silly thing and turn up to Ryka’s car park just north of Dorking on the A24 for the 10am start on Saturday 16th of February.

For those of you who haven’t experienced the delights of the Hilly 50 before, think of it this way – it’s the Tour of the Surrey Hills without the boring flat bits. What goes up inevitably goes down, but, just as inevitably, what goes down will certainly go up. And then down and up again. Ranmore, Leith Hill, Friday Street, that horrible ride up from Ewhurst, White Down and Box Hill crammed into fifty kilometres. How much more fun could you want?

This is a ride for all. Elite riders finish in under two hours, but there will be those who will do it in just under four, and they’ll be smiling as they collapse at the finish.

The Cheam and Morden CTC offer this nugget of joy to all at the bargain basement price of three quid, but, for those cyclists of a parsimonious disposition (and, rumour has it, there are a few) we offer a superduper discounted rate of two quid if you register in advance. You still pay on the line, but, by sending your name, telephone number, CTC number (if you have one) and club affiliation (if you have one) to me at simon_legg@yahoo.co.uk you will simply have to sign against your name, acknowledge the conditions, pick up your route sheet and guide, and then set off to make merry with your little ring.

I look forward to hearing from you

Simon Legg

Jake Dismounting at Christmas

Excuse me trying to experiment with the Blog. I have just got started up with a new picture process called "Picasa" and it seems to insist that you load up directly into the Blog from "Picasa" and not visa versa, where you go into the SWLDA Blog first, write your message, then upload a picture from "Dell", "Olympus", Micro Soft" or whatever. Does anyone subscribing have any experience with "Picasa"? If so can we have a dialogue via e-mail: mmorley@toucansurf.com I believe that "Picasa" is free from "Google" hence it maybe forcing me this way!
It certainly seems to have some good features like e-mailing photo's. Its super rapid, maybe it zips them before sending but you can send multiple pictures in seconds, whereas when you attach in the normal way it takes much more time and sending more that 3 photo's together can cause big problems for the receiver.
