Mike Morley Update

I am amazed and amazingly fit so can't find an excuse to stay longer. Today we have had hot 26C sunshine and no rain. The day started perfectly with exercises and a light breakfast while enjoying listening to the radio and music, fabulous views over the Karigali National Park, with the Cookaboro, Cockatoo's and Paraketes all joining in. Its is a fab situation with loads of wildlife, Possams, Wallabies the lot right over the balcony.Duty called at 8.30am so off to church and the obligatory prayers for you all like it or not.Back home and a chance to sunbath by the pool while listening to more music, a compilation of Andrew LLoyd Webbers greatest musicals from Cats to Evita and the fabulous Elain Page. Max volume as no one about. Beats cycling any day. I'm in serious need of replenishing my UK suntan, left between the sheets in hospital while ill. Those Nurses did a fabulous job and my dreams have been great!Helen arrived on Q at 12noon and cooked me the most fabulous Brunch before I set off for a bike ride and exercise, down to the beach. Its not fair is it. A mere 17km today to the beach after my overstretching work out yesterday off road in the Cascade and over to friends in Turramurra. 27km and a little too hilly resulting in a severe reprimand from my Trainer and Nurse. Must rush now off to Cinema to see the acclaimed Australian before a smashing dinner tonight.Ttfn Mike Morley

Read All About It

As most will know, our esteemed Editor-in-Chief of the Sou’Wester, Mike Morley, is suffering an anguished convalescence on the sands of Bondi Beach. As his shaking finger seems to have pointed in my direction (he’s getting his own back!), and as the deadline for news, reports, scandal, tit-tat etc for the Jan/Feb ‘09 edition of the Sou’Wester is 26 November (next Wednesday!), I am writing to ask if you could let me have copies of items already submitted, pending or white-hot off the paper, so that I can present them to our publisher Colin Quemby for setting and printing.

Now is your chance to get into print, so sharpen that pencil and let us know what you have always wanted to say. How about a Letter to the Editor from Disgusted Tunbridge Wells? You’ll never have a better chance than this! Don’t waste any time thinking about it – do it know!

Whatever you have got to say, let me have it now! My contact details are in the last Sou’Wester. The lines are now open!

(Ever so very temporary sub-editor)

Downlanders @ Star Rusper Lunch Sunday Oct 12

I joined by chance the Downland Section at the Star Russper while I was riding the John Ibbottson memorial cake ride, I was carrot cake (not a lot of people know that!) It was a welcome break seeing you all and helping to break the monotony of being dropped by my so called mates from KPRC when I slowly ascended Leith Hill after a hectic ABBA party at my place running until 4am after much dancing and beer! 4 hrs sleep is not enough for an old man like me. Anyway I got some lovely comments, thanks to David who said this was only my 2nd ride with the Downlanders this year (gate crashing lunch?) and Angie was so upset she had not been invited to the party I promised to rectify that another year! Barbara please note.
Took me 6hrs 40mins to do 69mls including stops so I was quite happy to get home in one piece. More info on the KPRC blog.

Information on Frank Syred required

I have received the following email (below). Can anyone give me the details to put these people in touch with Frank Syred - Lisa

Hi there, my father in law, Peter Phillips was a member of the Balham Cycling Club in 1950 and was junior time trial champion. He is keen to get any information and contacts on the club and we have helped with some research. We uncovered the article on Frank Syred and he is keen to contact him. Could you advise if he is still alive and if so how we could forward on a letter written by my father in law?

Do you have any additional information on the club, any contact details that would hold the records etc. Mr Phillips is now 75 and is very keen to revisit some of his past, and I do hope you can help.

regards,

Debbie

Ding Day

Ding Day
Creating a harmony around Londons’ cycling community

Wednesday 10th September will see London ring out to the sound of the bicycle bell on the first annual Ding Day – A celebration for the cycling community in London.

On this day London will become a joyful and happier city for cyclists, streets will ring to the sound of the bicycle bell. With every cyclist welcome and openly encouraged to participate, all that’s needed is a bike and a bell. There is no main event on the day, it runs all day whenever you are in the saddle on Ding Day.

The concept is simple:
On Wednesday 10th September whenever you see another cyclist you give a little ‘ding ding’ on your bell, and they will return your greeting with another ‘ding ding’.

The idea behind Ding Day:
To create a fun experience for cyclists and locals in and around London, with the hope of creating more of a sense of community amongst fellow cyclists, including commuters, parents, children, basically any cyclist young or old. It’s free and open to everyone.

It is a celebration of cycling as one of the most environmentally friendly, healthy and almost certainly quickest way of getting aroud our great city.

Snow but no Bike

Only ventured down the high st. of Walton on the Hill today. Some lovely snow though, one of my back garden and one of the villiage blacksmiths Magnolia tree (it must be in shock with all its petals loaded with snow).

C&M Hilly 50

Saturday 16 Feb 08
Congratulations to Ed and all his team of helpers (or was it leppers climbing on the band wagon - NO IT DEFINITELY WAS NOT), especially the Mitchell family and Graham for helping Ed carry the paste board from Rykers to top of Box Hill and congratulations to Gary Dodd for his usual masterful sub 2 hr time (1hr. 50min) fabulous for such an old boy. I guess the biggest cheer should go to Simon (L3) and his long suffering wife for marshalling at the most tricky point, Hoe Lane or was it How Lane and for the tremendous pre-publicity he generated to attract another record number of riders. Photo above shows L3 with 2 of the oldest riders en-route stopping for a chat and just missing the cut at 3hrs (by one minute). The guy in the middle was down as a Wayfarer (more like a wayward fellow) and the guy on the right with the matching blue top is Ubaldo commonly known as Toni (or is it Tagliatelli) - well anyway he comes from the country where Spagetti grows on trees.

SWLDA Hilly 50

Dear Cyclist

The Cheam and Morden CTC Hilly 50 has rightly taken its place among the pantheon of cycling events. Shorter than the Tour de France, and less cobbly than the Paris-Roubaix, it is, nonetheless, the most ridiculous of all the Classics. Last year 190 riders made the mistake of riding it. This year we hope that even more will do the silly thing and turn up to Ryka’s car park just north of Dorking on the A24 for the 10am start on Saturday 16th of February.

For those of you who haven’t experienced the delights of the Hilly 50 before, think of it this way – it’s the Tour of the Surrey Hills without the boring flat bits. What goes up inevitably goes down, but, just as inevitably, what goes down will certainly go up. And then down and up again. Ranmore, Leith Hill, Friday Street, that horrible ride up from Ewhurst, White Down and Box Hill crammed into fifty kilometres. How much more fun could you want?

This is a ride for all. Elite riders finish in under two hours, but there will be those who will do it in just under four, and they’ll be smiling as they collapse at the finish.

The Cheam and Morden CTC offer this nugget of joy to all at the bargain basement price of three quid, but, for those cyclists of a parsimonious disposition (and, rumour has it, there are a few) we offer a superduper discounted rate of two quid if you register in advance. You still pay on the line, but, by sending your name, telephone number, CTC number (if you have one) and club affiliation (if you have one) to me at simon_legg@yahoo.co.uk you will simply have to sign against your name, acknowledge the conditions, pick up your route sheet and guide, and then set off to make merry with your little ring.

I look forward to hearing from you

Simon Legg
Cheam and Morden CTC

Jake Dismounting at Christmas

Excuse me trying to experiment with the Blog. I have just got started up with a new picture process called "Picasa" and it seems to insist that you load up directly into the Blog from "Picasa" and not visa versa, where you go into the SWLDA Blog first, write your message, then upload a picture from "Dell", "Olympus", Micro Soft" or whatever. Does anyone subscribing have any experience with "Picasa"? If so can we have a dialogue via e-mail: mmorley@toucansurf.com I believe that "Picasa" is free from "Google" hence it maybe forcing me this way!
It certainly seems to have some good features like e-mailing photo's. Its super rapid, maybe it zips them before sending but you can send multiple pictures in seconds, whereas when you attach in the normal way it takes much more time and sending more that 3 photo's together can cause big problems for the receiver.
