Beddington Park ride - Sat 19 Dec

Latest forecast suggests it should be dry but cold tomorrow. Probably shouldn't go too far - Lower Morden lights will have to await another time. I am thinking of Waddon Way garden centre - mainly roads.

Golden Beeches weekend

Golden Beeches cycle ride organised by CTC South Bucks is a diary must in October. A choice of 3 rides, Fiona & David cycled the short 20 miler, Pete & Lisa joined the Medium 30 mile. Carolyn, twin sister Christina and friend Roz took the Hilly 56 cycle challenge.

Golden Beeches are the trees with their autumnal leaves, golds, reds, bronze lining our cycle route over the Chiltern Hills. With the added nature spotting of Deer, muntjack's and "Red Kites" soaring in the Sky.

Unfortunately the heavy downpour of rain, wet leaves and steep hills are a nasty combination for cyclists. The 'back marker' (on the long ride) decided to overtake on the inside where the wet leaves were masking drains & deep puddles; he traversed the steep section of a hill across the leaves, his front wheel flew off and he crashed onto the concrete. He was lucky, walking wounded, a kind neighbour drove him to Stoke Mandeville for a check up. The bike we did try to fix but the aluminium frame took the impact with bent spokes and forks.

Don't be put off though you just need Good Brakes, nerves of steel are a must for this ride and its a great way to end the season!

From Carolyn Beer

Pete and Lisa joined the Medium Group after the welcome tea and cakes. 20 riders split into two groups of 10, each with a leader and a rear guard (take note SWLDA!) The day was one of challenging, damp, leaf-covered lanes giving us three stops to chat whilst different people demonstrated puncture repairs.

Lunch was at the Catherine Wheel, Henley (JD Weatherspoon) and then more lanes and a steady climb and drop down to West Wycombe, by now in bright sunshine after the early drizzle. A climb up past the Golden Ball provided the added bonus of over 30 red kites soaring overhead and even the local dog walkers could be heard exclaiming that they'd never seen so many all together.

A clever, Google image based quiz followed by an excellent roast dinner (a big plate of spaghetti and veggie sauce for the vegetarians) and then a slide show of highlights from CTC tours given by John Gosnell rounded off a super day for us.

(Basic tale Pete, typing and re-editing Lisa!)

Birthday Rides 2011?

A new idea a new beginning, the breaking of a glimmer of an idea (not yet breaking news!) in fact the resurrection of an idea by Simmon Legg to bring 2012 Olympics to Surrey/London, lets say with the agreement of SWLondonDA but run by a small group of good volunteer organisers! This is early days and no formal offer has been made or agreed to. On the other hand, think about is there any support for the idea at all? Positive suggestions mainly please though negatives can also be constructive!
With the idea in mind and led by Bob Starey, Paul & I did a first reckey of what may well be one of the rides undertaken. Lea Valley to new Olympic Stadium partly via the Wandle, many parks, past the Cutty Sark at Greenwich and under the Thames foot tunnel to Canary Wharf on the way, returning via the Grand union to Camden Lock, thence to St Paul's, Millennium Bridge, the Beehive, South Bank. London Eye and Big Ben and back via Clapham common. What a wonderful route for those not familiar for the big smoke seen via greenways. Bob did an excellent job!
This message is just a teaser a tester and an even bigger idea! The Birthday Tea, hosted by Boris Johnston at the Beehive, now that would be a sensation and get CTC on the Map!!

No Cycling but magnificent views enjoyed much better walking

Paul and Bob taking time out!

Begginers Ride to Coast Sat. 11 July 09

Six intrepid riders (the Motley Crew), including yours truly, left Nonsuch park at 9.30am via Walton le Hill and then traversed the Downs Link to Shoreham led by the very able leader Tony Hooker. The trip was somewhat wet and became known as the ride of the punctures!! Gillian had one, I had one and Toni de made the distinction of having 4. Thus he got separated and found his way onto the A27 dual carriageway going towards Worthing, near Steyning. Having realised his mistake he reversed and got to Brighton station and was home by 5pm. Meanwhile the rest made it to Hove for tea. After a good sea food plata we managed to catch the 5.17pm train to East Croyden where I said goodbye and switched from platform 3 to 6 and within 5mins was on the train to Tadworth arriving home just after 7pm. This was my first begginers day ride and what will my broken hip and all that rain I found it very tough. My mileage 62mls and I must congratulate those who rode all the way from Nonsuch and then home from Croydon, must have been 80mls ?

It looks like John is giving Gillian a lecture but I think only a reminder to always carry a spare inner tube and a puncture repair outfit which we should all take note of!!

Sunday 5 July 09 Downlands

Had planned to go to Fairoaks Airport with the C&M and then onto Irene's for tea! Sorry I missed your generous hospitality again Irene. Total distance I think was a step too far having had only 2hours sleep on Friday night! See comment on C&M Blog. Graham & I had 2 great rides up Ditchling Beacon!! As for today few people were at 11's Reigate Garden Centre with Angie away in USA. I arrived as David & Dawn, Ken and Dianna were about to leave. I pootled back up Wray Lane having done Peblecombe earlier a distance of some 18mls, which got me home in good time to see the men's W19 final. As they say may the best man win and he did but Rodick to me was the real winner!!
As for the bike above, it looked very nice and I thought I might buy it for Barbara's Birthday but then I remembered she hates cycling and cyclists and all the paraphernalia that goes with it! She is so Independent, I wonder if its because she was born on 4th July!!

New Tea Room

Andy Coxhill C&M has asked me to point out a new venue for afternoon tea in Shere Village Hall. I hope you can see the dates but there is some flash back. Twice a month on a Sunday an Antique & Collectors Fair takes place. Phone number given. I bought a really old genuine walking stick £5 which is a snake catcher, it's very odd shape seemed ideal for catching grand children with small necks or ankles! Served at this venue is good home made cakes and tea/coffee/soft drinks for £1.80 and is recommended if in the area also for 11's. Some were disappointed we did not make Capel as planned but it appeared to be much better value than Abinger!

Eco Day in Stoneleigh Library

We have just learnt that there will be an Eco Day in Stoneleigh Library (Stoneleigh Broadway just by Stoneleigh station) 12:30 - 15:30 on Saturday 20 June. We could have a small stall if we wish.

Would anyone like to be there with leaflets and answer questions either for the whole time or until it is time to leave for the afternoon rides?
It clashes with the all day ride.

This is the last Saturday of Bike Week so I and Dr. Bike team members will be in Sutton Town Centre for the whole morning.

I will be pleased to hear of any offers on behalf of the Beginners/DA.

Thank you.

Shirley.

DA competition 2008 Attendance Awards

Norman has pointed out to me that the Sou'Wester May/Jun issue just out has a mistake. I took what is written on the Blog as correct. According to Norman he and Ed Sharp should change places. Could the adjudicators or Pete Mitchell please confirm or otherwise! Thank You. Editor.

If someone on the committee would actually pass the information on to those posting it online and in the Sou'Wester, we might not get mistakes like this!

Cheam & Morden Fairoaks Sunday 5Apr

Welcome John for these few days you have been with us from Fairlie, Firth of Clyde with your special friend who is also special to C&M, Mid-Week-Wayfarers, Hounslow, VCC etc etc.
A warm welcome to Margaret Squirrel who joined us at Fairoaks mixing with some of the older clientele of C&M
An even more splendid sight of Bill & Margaret about to take flight from Fairoaks on their Longstaff Tandem Trike.
Andy the Rides sec taking up the rear (or so to speak)

Thanks also to Graham for leading such a splendid ride on such a splendid day. The Basingstoke canal tow path was brilliant even on my Scott Pro!

P.S. To either Graham or Lisa! I wanted to put this on the C&M blog but for some reason I no longer have access. That's why its on the DA. Can someone please give it me back.

DA Photo Competition 208

Congratulations to all the winners and an encouragement to everyone to submit more photo's in 2009. I include myself in this as the above would have been one of my entries in the "Humouras" category, or even people (man & woman but I don't think we have that)
My second humorace cat would have been this. Question? why are Pam and Terry so attached to each other, actualy I think they make a perfect couple but don't tell Sally! Here Terry is trying to do a completely unnecessary cover up job!!!
This would have been my multiple people and building submission but as there is no such category either, I would have completely failed.
My building submission would have been this one and it is for this reason, that I congratulate Terry on his win, as clearly mine is much better than his???
Your Bighead ed!

Fireman Bob and Lesley

What's that saying, like father like son or in this case like Husband like Wife. Its was great to see Lesley this morning recovering so well from her hip operation. It must run in the family or it's something to do with those vegetables they grow!
Only 2 out today on the Tuesday offroad ride, don't we make a perfect couple. The wobbly bridge was very well behaved.

Update on Angela Launder

Spoke to Angie the other day and she is still suffering some pain. She is back to work by bus and will take the odd day off to help recuperation. She has had an MRI scan which shows no ligament breakage or serious tearing but its still sore and she needs to take it easy. Her plans for future trips are still in tact but it will be a least 2 weeks before she attempts to ride her bike if not longer, she will be guided by Dr./Physio. We wish her well but she says she is not yet ready to receive visitors.

Hilly 50 - February 14th - Postponed

Due to black ice on much of the course and the current forecast of snow and sub-zero temperatures over the next few days, the decision has been taken to cancel the event for this coming Saturday, in the interests of the safety of the riders.

Much of the course in the small lanes of Surrey and Sussex where the sun gets little chance to melt and dry the roads, and even the main roads had black ice on them today when the course was checked out. Even with the better weather forecast for Saturday there is little chance of the black ice having melted.

It is hoped that it can be run later in the year, and a provisional date of September 12th is currently being considered.

If you would like to be notified by email of further developments, please contact our online representative at Simon@cyclingswlondon.org.uk

Reminders of the Carol Service I missed 2008

While out walking in Walton this morning per chance I came across Margaret Marsh the Vicar and her husband, middle and right, the other two people were in conversation untill I interupted! When will I ever learn?

The parish church of St. Peters with little sign of any parishoners. Out of work you might say, well as the village is still pretty cut of, if it was like Monday the pubs were packed.

And still my car is loaded with snow, must clear it today as Wednesday night the new owner from Aylesbury is due to collect.

Not sure if I will make Cobham Wed 4 Feb, problem is getting out village, you cannot ride your bike only walk with it and its 13 miles. For those that make it have a safe and happy day. No breaking bones please!

4 Feb 09 Midweekrs having a great day

A Fantastic day was had by all the brave cyclists that made it. We toasted all the absent friends at the Running Horses Leatherhead, a venue suggested by Vic White. Im that rote this also absent. Thanks also to the self appointed leader who did a good job letting us all know to go 2 Sainsbury's as the B. Legion was shut.
To Irene and garaham you both missed a memorable day but I understand your caution, it took me 20 mins to get out of Walton on the Hill and the roads enroute in places were dier.
