2015 AGM

The AGM for CTC South West London will commence at 11:02 in the Hersham Amenity Hall on Wednesday 11th November.

The date and time coincides with Armistice Day so we will observe the 2 minute silence before the meeting starts. Please be in the hall by 10:50 to ensure that you have time to find a seat before 11 o'clock.

Signing in and distribution of the agenda and other paperwork will take place after this moment of quiet.

Should you arrive late the silence will be observed in the cafeteria and throughout the premises by the staff and regular clientele of the Day Centre.

It is the custom to award the Arthur Jessop Shield to recognise outstanding achievement in the club. If you wish to nominate someone for this award please communicate with the secretary or a member of the committee.

Cycle Safety and HGV's

Jeff pointed out in theJuly/Aug Sou'Wester that the MET invited cyclists to go along and get aquainted with the HGV drivers view of cyclists. I went along! It was very worth while and an eye opener. I was invited to climb into the drivers seat of this massive Mercedes truck (tractor part-no trailer attached). It was equiped with 7 mirrors all at different angles and panoramic views. The officer sitting in the passenger seat explained what the driver has to contend with. It takes 7 seconds to scan all mirrors while at the same time keeping and eye on the road ahead. The critical points made were the blind spots in front of the cab, the driver is so high up if you get too close he cant see you. Always go far enough in front to be seen as at the cycle ahead stop line.
Another very critical point is pulling along side the truck driver nearside as if in a cycle lane. The downward facing mirror above the passenger window will look down and pick up a cyclist if right next the the passenger door. It will not however see a cyclist in say a cycle lane some 1 meter away from the door - hence if the truck is turning left it will not see the cyclist. The advice never pull up on the inside of a truck or bus the driver most likely will n ot see you in certain blind spots.

This demonstration certainly taught me a lot and for MHM that's saying a great deal. Well done the MET a brilliant initiative well supported with some 10 officers helping to explain and demonstrating while you are in the cab where the blind spots are while riding a bike along side. Now you see me now you don't. I also got a free ultra violet bike code onto my Van Nich which is now on the MET Log.

Hilly 50 Saturday 7 March 2015

An interim report. Thanks to all who entered and rode on the day, you all had a fantastic day out in lovely weather despite the slightly shortened rout. Congratulations to Steve Winder of Epsom CC, though this is not a race but what I call a pre-season warm up or in the old CTC jargon a reliability ride, today more commonly known as a Sportive you did it in the words of Jeremy Clarkson in 1hr. 45 mins which is even better than the "STIG" - WOW! Second quickest was Russel Williams of KPRC in 1hr. 57mins. well done to you all.
Thanks very much to all who entered in total 61 riders on what was a beautiful day, we were so lucky. In the process CTC raised £305 + £25 in donations on the day a total of £330 for our local Hospice in Cheam - St. Raphael. Further donations are welcome!
It would not be fair to mention to many names but I would particularly like to thank Ray Dare the phenomenal 88 year KPRC & CTC member who holds so many National VTTA records for turning up and helping at the start. I would also like to mention in particular Graham Hill the former promoter when this event was a CTC Cheam & Morden event for his invaluable help in setting up the online registration and rout via GPS etc. I would alsolike to thank the CTC SWLondon district Chairman Dave Vine for all his help with the signing on and indeed for riding the event.
Many local cycling clubs supported this event lie Addiscombe who have for many years along with Epsom CC. I would particularly like to thank VCLondres for their support and the wonderful turnout of youngsters, you are the salt of the earth and a credit to future generations of sporting cyclists.
I will be posting lots of photo's in due course but for now thanks again for all who rode. Please let you friends know about the eventg again next year around the 8th March 2016y I would like to get 100 riders.

Signing on begins at 9.30am for a prompt 10am start. Route sheets are provided and the course is challenging. There are no marshals or signs and no food stops, you need to be self sufficient but it is a good early season training ride and the whole of the entry fee goes to the hospice. You can pre- register (but still pay £5 at the start) by going to www.cyclingswlondon.org.uk Go to the yellow homepage and on the LHS you will see “Entry Form” click on that and enter your details you will get an “Auto Reply” By going to the centre of the page you can download the route and map. The finish will be at the top of Box Hill at the NT. Cafe and I will be there until 2pm. For a real challenge some guy’s do this event in under 2hrs but under 3hrs is more the average. This event has been running for nearly 40 years promoted by CTC. The rider however is entirely responsible for his own safety.

Hilly 50 Warning Road Closed for 7 March 2015

Please note that Logmore Lane Wetscott is effectively closed due to ongoing water pipe works. There is a trench dug for new pipe and much mud. It is therefore decided to cut this normally tricky part of the circuit out!
Riders please note after descending Ranmore back into Dorking proceed to the A25. Do  not turn left into the one way system in Dorking which itself is at present closed to cars. Instead turn right along the A25 through the traffic lights and go Westward strait to Wesctcott. Carry on Westward through Westcott and pick up the normal route by the church and carry on Westward to turn left at the top of the hill at PH Wooton Hatch. This is at 9.7 miles on the old route but will be at approx 4.7 miles on the shortened route.
